John Cena won the Elimination Chamber on Saturday night and secured an Undisputed WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania this April. What followed was a shocking heel turn that fans have wanted for years. That’s not what I’m talking about here. We’re talking about how John Cena will technically become an 18-time World Champion if he beats Cody Rhodes. That would put him two ahead of Ric Flair.
Ever since Roman Reigns beat Brock Lesnar to unify the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship. From that point on, WWE recognized Roman as having two Championship reigns. With the Universal Championship and with the WWE Championship. Same with Cody Rhodes when he beat Reigns for the Undisputed Championship at last year’s WresteMania. If you look at WWE’s website it shows two concurrent reigns for Cody.
If Cena beats Cody it’s always possible that WWE in the future recognizes this as one World Title reign instead of two. There’s a few of Flair’s reigns that WWE doesn’t recognize from the past so they could always do that.
Provided John Cena does beat Cody Rhodes, I think they should recognize him as an 18-time World Champion. It’s add to the legend of John Cena and is a record that may never be broken. Especially given the current climate of WWE where long title reigns are becoming the norm. In the past three years, only two men have held the WWE Championship. Gunther’s in the middle of a long Title reign as World Heavyweight Champion as well. The days of hot-shotting the World Title are over and that would make it even harder to hit Cena’s 17 or possibly more importantly his 18th World Title.
