The Weirdest Elimination Chamber Show In History

WWE Elimination Chamber usually takes place in February or early March. However, in 2015 the event took place on May 31st from American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The event was supposed to happen in February like it usually does. However, due to the size of the chamber structure many arenas couldn’t handle the massive match-type. WWE pivoted from Elimination Chamber to Fastlane. It looked like we wouldn’t get the infamous Elimination Chamber in 2015.

However in May, WWE decided to cancel a live event that was supposed to be held in Greenville, South Carolina in order to bring the whole roster together for a super show on May 31st. The super show being Elimination Chamber. This was a weird show. WWE was in a transition period with the company trying to build the stars of the future while the main event talent of the past fades out. Wrestlers like Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens were on the rise while wrestlers like John Cena, Randy Orton, CM Punk and Edge were either on the downswing of their careers or retired.

Everyone’s favourite wrestler Stardust beat Zack Ryder in the lone pre-show match. The main card was opened by the first-ever tag team Elimination Chamber match. Reigning Champions New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) defeated The Prime Time Players (Darren Young and Titus O’Neil), Tyson Kidd and Cesaro, The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) , The Lucha Dragons  (Kalisto and Sin Cara) and Los Matadores (Diego and Fernando) in a solid match. I give them props for trying to be unique. This wouldn’t be the last time we’d see the tag team Chamber.

The next Chamber match featured Ryback beating Sheamus, R-Truth, Dolph Ziggler, Wade Barrett and Mark Henry for the Intercontinental Championship. This is a contender for the lowest star-power to wrestle in an Elimination Chamber match. This marked the first and only time that the event didn’t feature a match that had World Championship implications. The match was as good as it sounds. Not great.

The weirdness continued in the main event. Dean Ambrose challenged Seth Rollins for the WWE Championship. Ambrose won the match by disqualification so Seth Rollins kept the Championship. Rollins used the referee in the match as a shield to protect himself from Ambrose and was DQ’d. Losing the match but keeping the Title. A big brawl featuring J&J Security, Kane, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose closed the show, with Ambrose and Reigns hijacking the WWE Championship.

I think this is one of the more forgotten PPVs of the past fifteen years. The most forgettable Elimination Chamber event of all time that’s for sure. An interesting show to look back at. It’s also notable as being Tyson Kidd’s last PPV match before being forced to retire due to a neck injury. The Chambers while unique disappointed and the main event left a sour taste in people’s mouths. Would love to hear your thoughts on the event.

Book This Episode 1: The Summer of Punk Rebooked Prelude

Let’s go back to 2011, specifically June of 2011. CM Punk’s contract is expiring soon and he’s getting ready to have the biggest run of his career. On June 27th, 2011 CM Punk would cut a promo that would have the wrestling world buzzing for years to come. In his promo, Punk said that his contract expired next month and that he, the Number One Contender, would be leaving  WWE with the WWE Championship. He’d also go onto take shots at not only his opponent the following month, John Cena but other icons in the history of WWE. Whether employed by the company or not. He’d also tease defending his WWE Championship in Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Essentially he’d be a travelling World Champion, ala the territory days. Well, CM Punk did win the WWE Championship the next month from John Cena at Money in the Bank. However, what would happen after would disappoint wrestling fans more than anything else that’s happened in years.       How t...
