May 7th in Wrestling History: Ric Flair Beats Ricky Steamboat in Final Match of 1989 Trilogy

May 7th, 1989, Nashville, Tennessee - a date etched in wrestling history as the climax of one of the greatest trilogies ever witnessed in the squared circle. Ric Flair, the Nature Boy, clashed with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat in the epic culmination of their feud for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleWar '89: Music City Showdown. As we approach the 35th anniversary of this iconic event, let's take a trip down memory lane and revisit the magic of that unforgettable night.

The stage was set at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium, pulsating with anticipation as two titans of the ring prepared to do battle once more. Flair and Steamboat had already engaged in two classic encounters earlier that year, each match raising the bar of excellence in professional wrestling. Their rivalry had captivated audiences with its blend of athleticism, technical prowess, and dramatic storytelling, earning widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike.

Theirs was a rivalry fueled by mutual respect and an unyielding desire for championship gold. Flair, the stylin', profilin', limousine-ridin', jet-flyin' son of a gun, epitomized the essence of a champion, while Steamboat, with his unparalleled agility and unwavering determination, embodied the spirit of a warrior. Whenever these two competitors stepped into the ring, magic ensued.

The third encounter at WrestleWar '89 was no exception. From the moment the opening bell rang, the audience was treated to a masterclass in professional wrestling. Flair's trademark flair for the dramatic was on full display as he strutted and wooed his way around the ring, while Steamboat countered with his lightning-fast strikes and aerial maneuvers. Each near fall sent shockwaves through the arena, as fans held their breath in anticipation of the decisive moment.

In the end, it was Flair who emerged victorious, reclaiming the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in a match that would go down in history as one of the greatest of all time. But the true winners were the fans, who bore witness to a spectacle that transcended the boundaries of sport and entertainment.

The legacy of Flair vs. Steamboat lives on to this day, a testament to the enduring power of professional wrestling to inspire, entertain, and unite people from all walks of life. Their trilogy of matches remains a benchmark for excellence in the industry, and their influence can be seen in every classic encounter that followed in their footsteps.

As we celebrate the 35th anniversary of WrestleWar '89: Music City Showdown, let us pay tribute to the timeless brilliance of Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat. Theirs was a rivalry for the ages, a saga of passion, perseverance, and pure wrestling perfection. And though the years may pass, their legacy will endure, reminding us all why we fell in love with this incredible sport in the first place.

In his promo, Punk said that his contract expired next month and that he, the Number One Contender, would be leaving  WWE with the WWE Championship. He’d also go onto take shots at not only his opponent the following month, John Cena but other icons in the history of WWE. Whether employed by the company or not. He’d also tease defending his WWE Championship in Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Essentially he’d be a travelling World Champion, ala the territory days. Well, CM Punk did win the WWE Championship the next month from John Cena at Money in the Bank. However, what would happen after would disappoint wrestling fans more than anything else that’s happened in years.       How they bungled this storyline, I’m not ent
